Promo photos for musicians: how to prepare the imagery for a release
How to prepare promo photos for musicians and artists: brief, portraits, press, stage and cover. This is how I work on the imagery for a release.

An artist’s image doesn’t just show them: it amplifies them. Their aesthetic also speaks: it shouts, seduces, provokes and sells. When an artist prepares a release, the photos are the first thing press, platforms and audiences see, so they are worth planning ahead. This guide sums up how I prepare that work with singers and musicians.
First, identity (not the photos)
Before talking about locations or wardrobe, there is one question: what does your music say without words? An artist is not only their music: they are their gaze, their energy and their visual language. A session aligned with the artist’s essence is seen, felt and remembered.
That is why I start with a virtual meeting to understand the artistic proposal and define a creative direction that does it justice. I can develop the whole concept or work from one you already have.
Which images a release needs
A good promo set usually combines:
- Press portraits: clean, versatile, ready for media and digital platforms.
- Concept images: set, light and wardrobe that express the universe of the release (and work as a reference for the cover or graphic pieces).
- Stage and key moments: capturing live energy without interrupting the natural flow.
- Social media images: formats designed for day-to-day posting during the campaign.

How to prepare a promo session
- Set the calendar. Start from the release date and work backwards: editing, session, references, concept. My delivery is 5 to 10 business days, and I can prioritize it for a 10% surcharge if you are in a hurry, subject to my schedule.
- Gather references: covers, music videos, films, colors, textures. Tell me what you like about each one.
- Think of wardrobe as part of the character. Bring options and pieces that tell your story.
- Define where the images will be used: press, social media, platforms, cover, campaign. By default I deliver photos for social media, ecommerce and promotion; any other use is agreed and quoted separately.
- Coordinate the team. On large projects I work with makeup artists, stylists and videographers; I can also cover photo and video depending on complexity.
What my work with artists includes
The session can last between 2 and 9 hours depending on its type and needs; I deliver 15 to 150 final images depending on the agreed package, in high resolution and optimized for social media. Editing includes light, color and framing correction, and up to 2 rounds of corrections.
Common mistakes
- Starting with the photos instead of the identity.
- A single image for everything: press, cover and social media call for different formats.
- Leaving the calendar for last.
- Not talking about usage of the images before the session.
An image is not just promotion: it is presence, it is legacy. And if it isn’t remembered, it doesn’t work.
