Model portfolio: which photos you need and how to build it
Which photos a model portfolio needs, how many are enough, how to choose them and how to prepare the shoot with makeup, outfits and references.

A model’s portfolio is not an album of pretty pictures: it is a working tool. An agency, a brand or a casting director reviews it in seconds and decides whether they want to know more. That is why variety and clarity matter more than quantity. This guide sums up what you usually need and how to prepare it.
Which photos it usually includes
- A clean portrait, with simple light and little makeup: your face as it is.
- A mid shot, to show shoulders, neck and posture.
- A full-body shot, in clothes that fit and do not distract.
- A character image: a photo with atmosphere that shows your style and expression.
- An editorial or fashion look, to show you can work with a concept.
How many photos are enough?
There is no magic number. A short, varied portfolio beats a long one full of similar images. Each photo should add something different: expression, angle, outfit or register. If you hesitate between two very similar ones, keep one.
How to prepare
- Think about who will see it. A portfolio for fashion is not the same as one for advertising or the runway.
- Bring simple, neutral clothes: a T-shirt, jeans, a plain dress; that way they see you and not the garment.
- Look after your hair and skin a few days before; avoid trying new products.
- Let us talk about makeup: as natural as possible for the clean portrait; more freedom for the editorial.
- Gather references and tell me what you like about each. If you want, build a moodboard.

During the shoot
You do not need to “know how to pose”. I give you simple directions and the best photos usually come when you relax. Ask whatever you need and tell me if anything makes you uncomfortable.
Common mistakes
- Including too many similar photos.
- Using filters or heavy retouching: whoever reviews the portfolio wants to see how you really look.
- Choosing only the most flattering ones and forgetting those that show character.
- Not updating it: if your look or style changes, refresh the portfolio.
