Photo shoot: how to prepare so it turns out well
A guide to your first professional photo shoot: what to define beforehand, how to choose outfits, what to do on the day and how to select your photos.

A photo shoot turns out well when you arrive with a clear idea and feel comfortable, not when you know how to pose perfectly. Most of the result is decided before the first click. This guide gathers what usually makes the difference, whether it is for a brand, a portfolio book or a professional portrait.
1. Define what the photos are for
Before choosing clothes or a location, answer one question: where will the photos be used? A profile picture for a brand is not the same as a set of images for a campaign, a launch or a portfolio.
- Social media: you need variety, vertical formats and room for text.
- Website or shop: clean images, consistent with each other and well lit.
- Press or launch: one strong main image and several supporting ones.
- Personal portfolio: a range of registers: close-up, full body, character.
2. Gather references (and tell me what you like about each)
Save 5 to 10 images you like. What helps is not copying them but explaining what attracts you: the light, the colour, the pose, the mood. To organise them, I have a guide on building a moodboard and turning it into a brief.
3. Choose outfits ahead of time
- Bring more options than you think you need, including neutral basics.
- Prefer clothes that make you feel good: it shows in the photo.
- Plan the palette: a few colours that work together beat many unrelated ones.
- Iron or steam everything beforehand; wrinkles show and retouching them takes time.
- Check the details: underwear that does not show, accessories, clean shoes.
4. Look after the details in the days before
Rest, stay hydrated and avoid trying new products or haircuts right before. Let us talk through makeup and hair in advance so they make sense with the concept and the light.

5. On the day
- Arrive calm and with time to spare.
- Ask whatever you need. A shoot is a conversation, not an exam.
- Do not worry about “posing well”: the best photos often appear when you stop thinking about the camera. I guide you with simple directions.
- Eat something light and bring water.
6. Afterwards: how to choose the photos
When you receive the selection, do not pick only the “most flattering” ones. Look for a balance between the ones that show you well and the ones that show character, and avoid keeping too many near-identical images. Ask yourself what each one is for.
Common mistakes
- Not being clear about how the photos will be used and finding out afterwards.
- Bringing too few outfits and ending up with no variety.
- Copying a reference to the letter instead of taking its essence.
- Leaving the conversation about usage rights until the end. Settle it before booking.
