How to choose a photographer for your clothing brand: 8 questions before hiring
8 questions to choose a photographer for your clothing or design brand: portfolio, team, image usage, timing, corrections and booking terms.

Choosing a photographer for your brand shouldn’t be a leap of faith. Some brands have an exceptional product and an image that doesn’t reflect it, and that gap has a real cost: prices that are hard to justify and ideal customers who never arrive. These are the eight questions I would ask before hiring any photographer, and how I answer them when I’m asked.
1. Does their portfolio speak my brand’s language?
Don’t just look for “pretty photos”: look for coherence and a recognizable eye. Ask yourself whether your brand would fit in those images without looking like it’s in costume.
2. Do they understand the concept, or do they just shoot?
A good photographer asks before proposing. In my case, every project starts with one question: what should someone feel when they see your brand for the first time? If nobody asks you that in the first conversation, be wary.
3. Do they work alone or with a team?
Ask who does what: makeup, styling, production, video. I work with makeup artists, stylists and videographers on large projects, and I cover smaller sessions on my own. What matters is knowing it from the start.
4. What is the process, step by step?
They should be able to explain it in a few lines. Mine: a virtual meeting to define the concept, a quote, date booking with a deposit, the session, editing and delivery.
5. How long does delivery take and what does editing include?
- Timing: I deliver within 5 to 10 business days depending on the type and volume of the session (and I can prioritize for a surcharge, subject to my schedule).
- Editing: light, color and framing correction, with up to 2 rounds of corrections; advanced retouching is agreed if the project requires it.
- Quantity: between 15 and 150 final images depending on the package.
6. What about usage rights?
It has to be clear before the shoot. By default I deliver for social media, ecommerce and promotion; any other use is agreed and quoted separately.
7. What are the booking terms?
Ask about the deposit, payment deadlines and cancellation policy. In my case: a 60% deposit to reserve the date, the remaining 40% before final delivery, and cancellations notified at least 72 hours in advance.

8. Can they work where I need them?
I’m based in Medellín, and I can travel to other cities or countries; the additional cost depends on the location.
Red flags
- Nobody asks about your brand or about how the photos will be used.
- There is no process, timing or clear terms.
- The whole portfolio looks the same, no matter the client.
- Usage rights “will be sorted out later”.
